Weight -Loss: New drug is coming

New weight-loss drug coming very soon
There are many people who do not take our environment very seriously and think that people who want to save spotted white owls or swampland are just weird. The fact is that almost every cure or treatment for disease has originally come from nature. When we lose 1000 species a day, we do not know which one, if any, may have had the cure to eradicating cancer.
This new substance, which is the most effective weight-loss product ever seen before, comes from a chemical in the saliva of the Gila monster, a venomous lizard native to the deserts of the United States. Because of the harsh environment, this critter only eats every 3 months. That may not be a diet for you but the chemistry that allows it can definitely be used by science.
This new medication, called Saxenda, is a new injectable medication for obesity that has been submitted for approval to Health Canada has already won approval from the Food and Drug Administration of the United States on Dec 23, 2014.
There are many factors that contribute to our obese society and being overweight which now accounts for 40 per cent of all Canadians. We spend too much time sitting in front of our computer screens, not only for work but for gaming and socializing. Supersized drinks, burgers and candies are available everywhere. You might be going to Canadian Tire or Home Depot to work on a tough project but you will also find lots of fast food there. Food also has emotional value. Many people eat when they are depressed and get a short term rise in their serotonin levels. Food is for stress and even overfeeding friends and family is seen by many people as caring and hospitable.
Obesity is such a wide spread epidemic, the American Medical Association officially declared it a disease in 2013. In medical schools students are trained to think of obesity as the new universal evil, because it promotes diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease and even arthritis. (Joints are crushed).
We have had some good weight-loss products in the past but they have come with many side-effects, including heart disease which can sometimes lead to death. The most effective ones are central nervous system stimulants. When you are hungry you get irritable and edgy so anything that stimulates your mood and makes you happy can take away your appetite. Unfortunately these drugs and supplements in many cases increase your heart rate and your blood pressure and can be dangerous.
Probably the most notorious was a drug called fenphen, a combination of fenfluramine and phentermine. Once this drug gained widespread use, many people had fatal reactions, including heart and lung failure. Eventually this led to the drug being pulled off the market, billions of dollars of lawsuits and a huge underground economy that thrived on the sale of this drug.
This new injectable medication looks very promising. The drug is manufactured by Novo Nordisk, the pharmaceutical giant based in Denmark. The chemistry of the new drug, called liraglutide, also known as a GLP-1 agonist, is totally new. For some reason, receptors for GLP-1 are all over your body and therefore the drug works everywhere. Most physicians are aware of this drug in pill form known as Victoza and used to treat diabetes.
One of the researchers, Dr.Chris Sorli, a diabetes specialist at Rocky Mountain College in Montana concluded that it enhances beta-cell function, increases insulin and energy storage, acts centrally on the brain and slows down stomach motility.
This is a very powerful combination of weight loss effects. The medication wakes up and protects the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, which reduce blood sugar. It speaks to the brain directly, speeding up food satisfaction. And it lets food linger in the gut, as if it’s forcing you to eat slowly. It should be noted because the transit of the food through the gut is slowed down; the most common side-effects are nausea and constipation.
This drug is being targeted for both obese patients and diabetic patients as well. It is also planned as a treatment for pre diabetic patients. In Canada alone, there are about 3 million people with diabetes, but almost 6 million people with pre-diabetes (people with higher than normal blood levels of sugar).
If Novo Nordisk gets it approved for obesity and pre-diabetes as well as diabetes we may be able to prevent this disease in the future. Unfortunately most human beings, when given the choice, exercise and eat a healthy diet or take a pill will always opt for the pill. Although I always stress the former I usually have to deal with the latter. It is a reflection on our lazy and yet too busy society.
So how much weight can you expect to lose on this new medication?
It varies a lot but studies have shown than on average it’s about six to eleven per cent of your body weight. These numbers are based on a study published in The International Journal of Obesity, which involved 3,500 patients globally.
The problem with weight loss drugs such as this one is that they ignore intelligent counselling on weight loss through proper diet, exercise and a good night’s sleep.
People would not get fat if they would take the time to prepare meals at home and not continually snack all day with sugary foods. They would not get fat if they just walked for 30 minutes a day. They would not get fat if they slept through the night and did not wake up in the middle of the night eating food to stop the rumbling in their stomach. But people are people and we all have our weaknesses. We do not know the long-term effects of using this drug for many years so hopefully if this pill works, those that have lost weight will discontinue the medication and keep it off with a healthy diet and exercise.
